Read 2 Peter 3:7

(2 Peter 3:7) But by the same word the heavens and the earth that are now are stored up for fire and are being reserved to the day of judgment and of destruction of the ungodly men.

If you read that scripture out of context, well at first glance it could seem as though Jeh is going 2 destroy the earth with fire. – it says “ the heavens and the earth that are now are stored up for fire”

Let’s think about that from a logical perspective. The scripture says that the earth and heavens will be destroyed with fire. Is this a literal or figurative heavens and earth?

If it was the literal heavens, that would mean that the air, clouds and atmosphere would be destroyed with fire. This is not possible. In fact if you get up high enough in the atmosphere, there is not enough oxygen for fire to exist.

By extension, the heavens mean the stars, moon and our sun. The sun and the stars are fireballs of energy powerful beyond our comprehension. They could not be destroyed by fire.

So we can see that this it is not possible for the literal heavens to be destroyed. What about the earth?

The majority of the earth is covered by vast bodies of water. How would fire consume this?

When we consider it from a simple and logical perspective it is obvious that like many other passages of the bible, this passage is referring to the earth and heavens in a symbolic way.

Gen 11 :1 Now all the earth continued to be of one language and of one set of words.

Here the earth is symbolic of the people/nations on the earth. What about in revelation – a highly symbolic book.

Rev 12:16 But the earth came to the woman’s help, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river that the dragon disgorged from its mouth.

Here the woman and the dragon are symbolic. Without delving into the understanding of this scripture we can see that the literal earth cannot come to the help of the woman, so it is symbolic of entities, peoples or organizations.

So what will happen to our earth?

Psalm 104: 5 He has founded the earth upon its established places;
It will not be made to totter to time indefinite, or forever.

Psalm 37:29 The righteous themselves will possess the earth,
And they will reside forever upon it.
